Key Takeaways

Off-Page SEO can feel like a dark, nebulous pit in the ground that has no answers, is full of chaos and mystery, and is better left to the professionals. The reality is that any digital marketer with their salt needs to understand the complexities of one of the most vital categories of SEO. If you don’t understand how to execute Off-Page SEO effectively, you will flounder at the bottom of search results with the rest of the “cesspool.” My goal today is to help you better understand where to start. If you haven’t yet, I’d recommend checking out the other articles in our The Fundamentals of SEO series.

What is Off-Page SEO?

Although it goes by many names, Off-Page SEO is predominantly considered to mean external backlinks pointing one way into your website. The reality is that it is far more than that, let’s explore a few elements.

Backlinks – Backlinks are, as mentioned earlier, one way links from an external resource pointing back to a page on your website. What types of resources can backlink? Videos, Images, PDFs, etc. This calls back to the very infrastructure of the web, what we call Forces Academia. There are a variety

Social Signals – Social Signals can be summarized as social media activity. Having and maintaining a social media presence, having those social media profiles available on your website, and other people referencing, participating, and engaging with your URL and social media handles all contribute to an active, thriving, and trustworthy organization.

Brand Mentions – Many beginning marketers think that niche marketing or arbitrage is the be-all-say-all of Digital Marketing. The reality is that this view is short-sighted and forgets what the big dogs know: brand is king. If you control a brand, you command an audience. Your ability to stand out in a crowded market increases if people know they can rely on your brand. The more you establish yourself the more trust you have, and that will be reflected in your SEO rankings. Those metrics are referred to as Brand Mentions.

Why Off-Page SEO Matters

In a world where everyone thinks they are the best, Google can’t trust what anyone says about themselves. Off-Page SEO helps Google understand who deserves to rank at the top of their search results. If you intend on having a thriving business, Off-Page SEO does more than rank you better in Google, it can drive real business outside of search engines.

“In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.”

— Google’s Search Central Documentation

Authority is the primary consideration for Off-Page SEO. As mentioned earlier, Google still utilizes an academic infrastructure to determine authority. What does that mean for you? You need to treat every single page of your website like a research paper. If you do that, you’ll stand out from the masses. But, is that enough?

No. Having a well written research paper isn’t enough, afterall, there are tens of thousands of other research papers of varying qualities on the web: yours is on the bottom of the pile. But, imagine for a second you submit it to several quality pee-review journals, academic magazines, and conferences. Guess what, your peers like it and they continue to reference is publicly. Soon, other people are citing your research paper in theirs, helping validate their findings and in turn helping your article stand out in that massive pile of research papers. Why? It is now an authoritative piece in a crowd of mediocre and low-quality research papers.

If your website has many other websites in your industry or related to it, linking back to you does the same thing: it builds authority. Google has one job: to serve its clients. If you can prove to Google you deserve to be there, they’ll serve your content to those clients. The only way they know they can trust you is by looking at how well regarded you are in your own industry. That’s where citations come into play.

Citations, the industry term for backlinks, does precisely that. If you are trusted and well-regarded as the authority in your industry, Google can do that as well. But isn’t that easily gamed? No. Google’s primary job for preserving the integrity of its search results is to ensure that Google searchers don’t have to wonder if they will get good search results when someone clicks on a link they recommend. That’s where Google’s Web SPAM team comes into play.

Because of their efforts, Google still maintains a 90+% hold in the search engine market. Furthermore, it’s why Google sees over 8.3 Billion searches every single day. That’s a lot of trust, and Google will continue to ensure they maintain that. After all, that’s why they were able to command $339.85 Billion in 2024: that’s more than Saudi Arabia’s GDP.

You can’t just game the system with Off-Page SEO factors; you need to earn them and earn them from other relevant and high-quality websites in your industry. This is, by all means, the primary driver of Google PageRank.

Beyond PageRank, backlinks do one other very important thing: drive referral traffic. Backlinks from credible and trusted websites no only drive trust and authority with Google, but also build trust and authority with your consumers. In my experience, putting quality links in the right places can drive eCommerce sales in hours. Do not underestimate the value of backlinks for driving revenue quickly. It’s a multifaceted and valuable approach to permanent high quality traffic in both Search Engines and your potential customers.

Core Strategies for Off-Page SEO

Off-Page SEO can be simplified down to one area of focus: link building. This might be referred to as backlink building, backlinking, etc., but it’s the same process. While you need to stay compliant with Google’s guidelines, having the ability to find and build relevant and trustworthy backlinks within your industry is critical to your ability to succeed online.

“If other prominent websites on the subject link to the page, that’s a good sign that the information is of high quality.”

— Google’s Search Quality Evaluator Guidelines

Link Building

Link building often falls into the messy world of Black Hat SEO, something we here at Rook Digital do not condone, nor do we participate in. If you hear the terms Link Network, Link Farm, Link Wheel, Blog Network, or find someone hocking links at prices that seem too good to be true, run for the hills. These are almost guaranteed to get your website penalized and obstruct your ability to rank online.

So, what link building falls within our parameters?

Content Marketing

Content Marketing is generating high-quality and valuable content that encourages other websites to link to you. In short, they’re authoritative research papers designed to do SEO like we’ve described in this series. This series, after all, is doing exactly that.

Outreach

Outreach involves you identifying and encouraging backlinks from relevant websites within your industry. We might refer to this as Leverage Link Building, Webmaster Outreach, Guest Posting, and Article contribution. Some of these are quick wins that build a ton of authority, others are going to lead to frustration, rejection, and dismissal, but the few wins you get will be well worth your efforts.

Partnerships

Very often, having an established partnership will provide opportunities for you to ellicit relevant and authoritative backlinks. It’s important to note that a best practice in our industry is to acknowledge and display a disclaimer when something is a sponsored or advertised link, and we would absolutely encourage this where appropriate.

Social Media Engagement

Very often, blogs, forums, and other social media users will repost or embed articles, carousels, images, or videos from social media. These social signals not only build trust in an active brand but also increase backlinks to your website.

Local SEO and Citations

Covered in our Local SEO Fundamentals series, Local SEO and Local Citations have tremendous value in helping a brick-and-mortar or local service area business rank well in their market. We cover this in far more detail, but trust that seeking honest reviews and establishing yourself on all local directories and website listings in your area will do wonders for your visibility and reach; your Google Business Profile is chief among these.

Content Distribution

Beyond traditional link building is Content Distribution. This can include a variety of conventional marketing campaigns like PR, Press Releases, Guest Blogging, and viral video campaigns. If you can leverage these services to get your content in front of eyeballs in a way that makes them talk about you, you’re heading in the right direction and all of these can drive a flood of highly authoritative backlinks to your website.

Anchor Text Optimization

Anchor Text is one of the most vital parts of your backlinking strategy. If you aren’t leveraging anchor text correctly, you’re stumbling where you should be leaping. Understanding how to use Anchor Text explicitly and adequately understand the complex world of Anchor Text ratios is essential. This critical factor can skyrocket you to the top of search engines or drive you six feet under in the proverbial underworld of Google search results.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid when Link Building

You may be sick of me cautioning your use of bad link-building strategies and tactics, but the gravity of this process cannot be understated. One of the fastest ways to get your website penalized is a poorly thought-out and executed backlink strategy: after all, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

“The quantity, quality, and relevance of links influence Google’s evaluation of pages for ranking.”

— Google Search Central Documentation

Low-Quality Backlinks

We’ve discussed the value of high-quality and relevant backlinks but not the negative effects of low-quality backlinks. If high-quality backlinks drive authority, low-quality backlinks drive toxicity. The more of these negative signals you have, the harder it will be for you to rank.

That doesn’t mean your entire website anymore; it can often mean a specific page won’t rank, or you can’t rank for a specific phrase. The complexities of SEO are highlighted in this area, so make sure you know what you’re looking for as you approach this necessary step in your Digital Marketing. Low-quality signals are just as important as high-quality signals. Here are a few for you to consider:

  • Lack of Authority – The referring website doesn’t have any PageRank of it’s own.
  • Irrelevance – The website linking to you has nothing to do with your industry.
  • Toxicity – You’re getting links from a website that has participated in Black Hat SEO or low-quality backlinking and this bleeds over to your website.
  • Traps – We know from Google’s past behavior with the Google Panda and Google Penguin algorithms that they often lay traps to catch people in SPAMMY link building efforts.
  • Referring Domains – If you have too many links from the same few websites, it sends a low-quality signal.
  • Run-of-Site Links – links embedded throughout the entirety of a website, like the footer or side navigation of a blog.
  • Paid or Rented Backlinks – If you have to pay for a link, or the link will be pulled down, you’re blatantly violating Google Webmaster Guidelines.
  • Bad Neighborhoods – This is typically designed as anything related to Poker, Pills, or Pornography (the three P’s).

Is that everything? No, but it should give you an idea of what to avoid when seeking backlinks.

LD50: Manipulation and Over-Optimization

If you feel like you have to scheme to get backlinks, you’re probably doing something wrong. The two most common places where we see this is the over-use of Anchor Text and the use of link schemes. Two very important factors in SEO are Intent and Extent. The intention behind something must be good, but if you do it to an extreme extent is is just as bad as doing something with the wrong intent to a small degree.

In medicine, they refer to this as the lethal threshold, most typically quantified by a metric known as LD50. LD50 refers to the amount of any particular substance that would kill 50% of a population. For our purposes, any amount of bad intent is the LD50 of that effort. If you’re doing it with bad intentions, stop.

Building a Balanced Off-Page SEO Strategy

Now that we understand what Off-Page SEO is, what to consider, and what not to do, we need to build a comprehensive strategy. Where do we start? We start with guiding principles that ensure we do things with the right intentions and to the proper extent.

“A link from a trusted site is a good indication that your content is valuable.”

— John Mueller, Senior Webmaster Trends Analyst at Google

Quality Over Quantity

Quality is king. That is, after all, why you trust brands like Apple, Ferrari, and ATT. You understand what you will get when you buy these products or use their services. If you’ve been paying attention, building a brand is not just important for your business, but for your SEO efforts. When you consider your brand, where would your brand be discussed? How would it be referenced? Why would people use you over your competitors. Consider all of these factors when considering if a backlink is worth pursuing.

Imagine you’re applying for the #1 job at Google (the #1 spot in Google search results). You have a polished resume, went to the best school, and are a perfect fit for the position: so has Jacob, your rival who is jockeying for that same job. The interviews all go well, and then they reach out to your references. You know Jacob has tremendous support from your professors because they would only endorse one of you. You, however, have only one reference: your uncle who sits on the board for Google. Who’s going to get the job?

Off-Page SEO is your reputation: one good word from someone revered in your community is worth far more than dozens of votes from people with a lower reputation.

Integrated Approach

It’s not just about Off-Page SEO, it’s about everything combined. As referenced in our On-Page SEO article, if you get the stuff you control right you can beat 99.999999% of your competitors out of the gate. That means your Off-Page SEO signals only need to push you past the top 0.000001% of your competitors who actually know what they’re doing.

This approach will help you win and win big in your market. How do I know? Because at Rook Digital, we’ve done this exact same thing for hundreds of businesses just like yours.

Tracking and Adjusting

How do you know it’s working? The same way any scientific process works: you track your results. Tools like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and premium apps like SEMRush or AHREFs can help you track what links are sticking, what was removed, increases in referral traffic, and increases in your keyword rankings. If things aren’t working, you need to adjust your efforts and try something new.

Conclusion

I can’t understate the value of Off-Page SEO in your Digital Marketing efforts. The beauty of these efforts lies in the fact that you are driving new revenue at each step in the process, especially if you’re building links on relevant and authoritative websites. Why? because those websites have traffic and that traffic most likely wants what you have to sell.

How do you maximize your Off-Page SEO value? You do your On-Page SEO properly. Remember, this is a world of academic infrastructure, which means if you write a good research paper and get lots of relevant and trustworthy citations (backlinks), you’re going to dominate your industry.
